The Madrid System, administered by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), allows a trademark owner to file a single international application and seek trademark protection in over 130 member countries — including the USA, EU, UK, China, Japan, UAE, Australia, and Canada — through one streamlined process. For Indian businesses expanding globally, the Madrid System is the most cost-effective route to multi-country trademark protection.

To file through the Madrid System, the applicant must have a base application or registration in India (the office of origin). The Indian base is then extended to the designated countries through a single WIPO application — with one set of fees, one language (English, French, or Spanish), and one renewal date. Each designated country's trademark office examines the application under its own law and issues a refusal if it finds grounds — otherwise the mark is protected.

The Madrid System is an international trademark registration system administered by WIPO, allowing a trademark owner to file a single international application and seek protection in over 130 member countries. It is based on a base application or registration in the applicant's home country (in India's case, the Trade Marks Registry).

Over 130 countries are members of the Madrid System — including the USA, EU (covering all 27 member states), UK, China, Japan, Australia, UAE, Singapore, and many others. For countries not in the Madrid System, we file direct national applications through local attorneys.

A Madrid international registration is dependent on the base Indian application or registration for the first five years. If the base application or registration is cancelled or abandoned during this period, the international registration also lapses — this is known as central attack. After five years, the international registration becomes independent. We advise on managing central attack risk.

A WIPO international trademark registration is valid for 10 years from the date of the international registration — and can be renewed indefinitely for successive 10-year periods through a single WIPO renewal covering all designated countries.
